Bishopton Rugby Club are delighted to be supporting “Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week”. Our Ladies Captain Sarah Milnes, who was one of the founders of the ladies section in 2018, is a huge advocate of work being done within the club to encourage female participation.
Sarah says: “For a long time, activity levels among girls has trailed boys and we’re working to address the barriers that too many girls and women still face when it comes to getting involved in sport. Therefore at Bishopton we have launched girls only sessions for Primaries 4 to 7 and this has seen fantastic uptake already in the first few weeks with smiles all round. Rugby at this age group has always been open to both girls and boys however there have only been a handful of girls until now. We’ve already got some mums and daughters that both train and we hope that as participation increases we’ll have many more families coming along where everyone has a go. Our motto of attitude over ability has never been more relevant than in this area. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to be part of such a warm and supportive organisation as Bishopton Rugby Club.“
This week is about positive stories and inspiration too. Over the past few weeks we’ve been highlighting our Ladies by posting profiles of what makes them tick and how Rugby now influences their daily lives. If you head over to our Club website you can see them all. It’s no coincidence that, old and new, everyone mentions fun! The women’s team is built on a solid foundation of forming new friendships and making sure everyone is enjoying training and games. Our ladies section will amazingly be nearly 3 years old soon and our numbers continue to grow week on week. We are all gearing up for when we can return to playing, but one thing is for sure – Bishopton Ladies will be ready!
