With a return to rugby on the cards with a couple of weeks out due to covid and the bye week in the league the Bishopton 1XV were eager to get back to action with a trip out to Cumbernauld on the cards. Always an exciting game to watch as both teams are well matched to one another. The weather was set to be nice as well with rain coming down heavily in the run up to the match on Saturday, and it stayed off for the most part with some sporadic showers throughout the game that lead to a good number of Knock ons throughout the match.
The first 10 minutes brought a lot of mistakes from both teams as scrums and lineouts were traded, but Cumebrnauld were given the first penalty in a kickable position and they took the opportunity with the kick sailing between the posts with ease. They were quickly rewarded again two minutes later as they gained a penalty in virtually the same position with the same result pushing them further ahead at 6 – 0.
Bishopton returned up the pitch and were given a penalty of their own, it was a long range effort from the 10 meter line but the kick sailed just wide of the post from Catto. Bishopton continued to keep the pressure on from the 22 drop out that followed. But the hosts were able to get the ball back and clear their lines with a long kick up the field, but as it was caught the ball bobbled out of hand and the knock on was awarded. From here Cumbernauld were able to build a strong base off the scrum and work the ball through the hands creating a 3 on 2 on the opposite wing leaving them the space that they needed to get round the outside of the Bishopton defence. The managed to get under the posts allowing another easy kick at goal allowing them to push ahead 13 – 0.
With 20 minutes gone on the clock at this point Bishopton finally started to look like they were settling into the game defensively, not allowing Cumbernauld to spend much time inside their 22 for the rest of the game. And Keeping the pressure on the hosts and keeping them in their own half. But the Bish were unable to convert the chances, the closest that the bish came to a score in the game was through Gervais who was able to break the line and place a perfectly weighted grubber kick towards the try line, with Douglass flying down the wing in support and looked like he would be able to drop onto it as it crossed the line but the Cumbernauld Fullback was able to edge him out in the foot race to the ball.
Towards the end of the game it became a bit more disjointed with both teams conceding penalties and Cumbernauld receiving a yellow card in the dying minutes before the referee brought an end to the game.
The Barnhill Farm Glue player was Sandy Glassford with two try saving tackles.
This weekend sees two games set to be played at Holmpark with the 2XV kicking the day off with a game against GHK Gazels with an 11AM kick Off and the 1XV hosting Birkmyre for the second time this season at 3PM. With Former Players and Friends of the Bish Lunch taking place between the two games.
