For those lucky enough to attend the Scotland v France game at the weekend may have noticed the Regional Awards Winners tucked away in the middle of the program with a familiar club name published under the Tennent’s Community Club of the Season Award! As a club we are now delighted to announce that Bishopton Rugby has been named Glasgow South Community Club of the Season.
This is a fantastic feat to have achieved in the inaugural year of the award this award comes down to the outstanding work that is carried out in the community and show the huge strides that we have made over the course of the season. This has been resultant of bring in Sean Callaghan as our Youth Development Officer over the summer. Sean has been going into all our Catchment Primary schools every week, developing a strong working relationship with the teachers and children encouraging them to get involved in the sport!
Our continued work with Cardiac Risk in the Young (C-R-Y) has had yet another successful year with further screenings taking place for players with in the club and the wider community between the ages of 14 -35 seen a total of 210 young people screened to ensure that they are in the best of health. The outstanding work carried out by Kenny and Doreen Seymour is beyond measure and we can only hope to grow this further in the future to ensure that even more young people are screened.
This year we have also been able to expand on the growing of the ladies’ game in rugby and we are in a unique position in Renfrewshire to be the only club with a ladies’ section. A section that continues to grow with new Ladies joining week to week, most if not all, joining with no playing experience! It’s a testament to the coaches and the ladies themselves how they support these new players at every training session. Over the past year the ladies were invited into the SRU National Women’s Development festivals by the SRU. This then put them in the shop window and brought them the opportunity to be entered in the National Bowl competition due the quick progression they have been making as a team. It has only been fitting that the on the day the SRU announced that Bishopton RFC were winners of the community award and indeed International Woman’s Day, that the team would go on to secure their first ever competitive win against Ardrossan RFC in only their 3rd competitive match!
The club now awaits the SRU end of season awards dinner to see if we will take the national award against the two other reginal winners in Strathmore RFC and Langholm RFC. But until then we continue to grow the club, grow the sport and grow the love of the game.
